I’m a very people-oriented person, which is why a job as an HR Coordinator fits me well – it’s all about people. With HR, my job can vary day to day. I help with recruitment, employee questions on policies and benefits, I support managers with anything related to employee/team development. A big part of my job is to ensure that both employees and management feel supported, and many times that could simply be to listen when they need someone to talk to.
I’ve been in VELUX for one year now and time has just flown by. The people here are really nice and easy to talk to. I feel everyone's passionate about their jobs and passionate about working together. It's been fun and I feel there's room for making mistakes, learning from them and asking questions.
There’s no way happy employees aren’t going to equal success
In my job I talk and connect with the people here, and it’s fun because every person is different. I’m growing and helping others grow, which I really like. But I also sometimes experience that people find HR colleagues kind of intimidating – for example when asked to come by our office, and in general they might be a little bit more careful to speak or say their true opinions in our presence. However, they need to feel that they can come to me with anything and speak up, so one of my goals is to create that safe space and trust. If employees are happy, the company is happy. There’s no way happy employees aren’t going to equal success.
Part time boxing teacher
I used to work at a gym where I was teaching big and small classes in boxing as well as personal weight training. I loved it, but I also knew that I had to move on to new challenges. So I considered other options like becoming a teacher or a physiotherapist. However, those options were not quite what I was looking for, so I started to look into other jobs where I would still work with people, which was when I came across HR.
I recently created my own boxing set-up at home in the garage. I started teaching boxing again in my spare time, both because I missed it, but also because gym prices went up after the pandemic. A lot of people that I knew couldn’t afford it in the same way, so I wanted to provide something affordable where they could still do their training. To be honest, I think it is something everyone should do, as it builds confidence and dedication. I know it sounds cheesy, but it makes me so happy to see people grow and build up that confidence.
One of my biggest fears was to step into an inactive office job
I was a bit worried about stepping into an office job now that I was used to being so physically active working in the gym. It was actually one of my biggest fears because I was on my feet for most of the day and worked out a lot as the machines were already there. Luckily, I will say, my job isn't that rigid. I walk and talk to employees, I go down to the warehouse, and I use the standing desk for most of the day to avoid sitting too long. But it’s definitely a big adjustment, I won’t lie. I brought my jump rope to work a couple of weeks back to use in my break – maybe I should turn that into a habit.
Motivational comics
When I’m not teaching boxing or practicing myself, I like to draw comics. I typically draw something that is motivational for people and put it on my Instagram. I use Instagram as a way to promote my boxing, but my posts also focus on living a healthy lifestyle, mental health, self care and small life lessons.
